Barbara Mertz (1927-2013) wrote under the pen names of Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels as well as her own. She was a well known Egyptologist and utilized her background and expertise to write over 50 historic mystery novels centered around the thrills and dangers of discovering and unearthing the cities and burial tombs of ancient Egypt (4000 B.C. to 300 B.C.) during the early 20th century. Her most well known and loved novels revolved around a British female Egyptologist and reluctant detective, Amelia Peabody, her husband and her multi-cultural family. Their harrowing, and sometimes comical, adventures as they discover and explore ancient tombs include kidnappings, disappearances, treachery, betrayals, and murders. At the same time, readers can learn a lot about the lives and times of the Pharaohs and citizens of ancient Egypt and the social and cultural differences of early 20th century British versus Egyptian citizens.
